July 15, 2009Jonathan Kelsey Gets "High"
What's this? Yet another fashion-meets-film venture? There's no guy running around in underwear (Mr. McQueen) or a creepy 11-year old shelling YSL, but Jonathan Kelsey's teaser trailer for his film, "High," does have bloody noses and, naturally, puffs of smoke! The full film debuts today. Cue munchies? via Refinery 29 Posted at 02:19 PM in Film, Video | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBack (0) February 05, 2009Anna Wintour is ready for her close-upThere is nothing more that we love than a fierce fashion diva. Some people may think that we are referring to some waifish barely 18-year-old model with cigarette ash for brains, but they'd be wrong. And "it" girls? What does that even mean? No, we are referring to working gals who live for fashion. Case in point? The internationally feared and respected Anna Wintour. Filmmaker R.J. Cutler must have read our mind since he filmed a documentary about the making of US Vogue's September 2007 issue. In the immortal words of Rachel Zoe, we die. This is just too good to be true. The film, aptly named The September Issue, premiered at Sundance last month and has been picked up for distribution and will debut in theaters in (you guessed it!) September this year. The only thing we can think of that would be better than Meryl Streep channeling the polarizing EIC is watching the real thing in action. We're already sharpening our nails to get ready for this doc which we hope will feature as many cat fights as it does catwalks. -- MAX BERLINGER Posted at 04:23 PM in Film | Permalink | Comments (1) | TrackBack (0) December 16, 2008Film Fashion: Were the World MineWe were as giddy as fairies when we read Shana's write up and Popnography blog post about Tom Gustafson's delightful new gay movie musical, Were the World Mine. Centering around a bullied gay high school teen who, in rehearsals for his all-boy school's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, concocts a magic potion that he uses to turn not only his unrequited love but the whole town gay, it's a fantasy straight from our in-the-closet teenage years that we were happy to get lost in. And the story wasn't the only thing that made us swoon -- lead Tanner Cohen, who plays the outcasted Timothy, is a tall drink of what we can only assume is delicious water.
Were the World Mine is enjoying a limited release after a slew of good reviews and awards on the festival circuit. If you're looking for your chance to see Cohen and his merry-band of 'mos, click here for release dates. -- SETH PLATTNER Posted at 01:41 PM in Film | Permalink | Comments (1) | TrackBack (0) November 19, 2008Breaking Down Bond's StyleThe other day on Popnography they were obsessing about Daniel Craig's perfect package in his perfect khakis in the new James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, and, while yeah, we dig that, we're even more obsessed with Bond's style. So how do you get it without spending your rent check on a Tom Ford tux (he designed all the suits in the movie, after all)? We're here to help: First up, those khakis. Khakis are at once one of the most ubiquitous garments in the men's fashion spectrum and also one of the most difficult to pull off perfectly. Pleats or no pleats? Cuff or no cuff? Fitted or relaxed? So many times a pair of khaki pants can be the right size in one area, but too big in another -- i.e. they'll sit fine on the waist but be too saggy in the crotch or seat of the pant. Because they have become synonymous with classic American style, they have fallen victim to classic American obesity, meaning they are cut fuller for larger guys. And while that works for the big guys, others of us tend to suffer. So, the rules -- as far as the Stylelist is concerned -- for khakis. The most classic and fashionable khakis have a medium wash, a plain front, and straight or tapered, uncuffed legs. But, gays know rules are for breaking, so if you are going to add some cowbell to your khakis, do it in moderation. So cuffs or pleats, but not both. Get it? Michael Bastian is making khakis of all cuts and colors, so look to his lines and the Uniqlo's and Zara's knock-offs to get the look. For that low-rise, high crotched Daniel Craig look, any of the more high-end European labels -- Burberry makes a nice pair -- are your go to bottoms. Now, some guys just don't do the form fitting pant, and we get that. If that's the case, Save makes a great pair of relaxed, casual khakis that still have a slimmer shape to them to keep you from looking inappropriately frumpy. They'll work with a sweater and a blazer, or just a tee shirt on the weekends, and because you can wear them from season to season, the $100 price tag is totally worth it. Now, we love his khakis, but Bond is best known for, what else, his tuxedos. Keep up with Stylelist for the rest of the week for more tips on how to get Bond style without having to break any necks or blackmail terrorists. -- SETH PLATTNER Posted at 03:31 PM in Burberry Prorsum, Film | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBack (0) August 15, 2008Quickies: Casting Chanel, Steven Alan, Pope & PETA, Wrangler ads, Barneys mapsPhoto: Getty Images > Casting Chanel: Alessandro Nivola (above) has been confirmed to play a dashing Arthur "Boy" Capel to Audrey Tatou's Coco Chanel in the upcoming big screen biopic. > Steven Alan opens in Brooklyn: For anyone in search of perfectly tailored basics, when price is no option. > Will the Pope go naked rather than wear fur?
