Quickies: Ralph Lauren on top, how Bruno broke Fashion Week and more

82790893 Photo: Getty Images

To no one's surprise, Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani topped DNR's list of the most powerful men in men's fashion.
We didn't make the list this year, but we're expecting to roll in at a solid #98 next year. [DNR]

Remember when Sacha Baron Cohen infiltrated the runways during the shows in Europe as Bruno? Well, here is how he did it. [The Cut] via [WWD]

Quickies: Armani hints at retirement, Mr. Blackwell dies at 86 and more

81813972 Photo: Getty Images

Giorgio Armani (pictured) says designers need to learn to "not have any claims" over their label.
He's had the fashion world guessing for years about his next move, but could he be finally hinting at retirement? [Stuff.co.nz]

Fashion critic Mr. Blackwell passes away at the age of 86. Having roasted everyone from Princess Margaret to Britney Spears on his annual worst dressed list, the biting one-time designer showed us gays the power of the "oh no she didn't!"  [IHT]

Seoul and India kick off their respective fashion weeks.
Why should you care? With the global economy being as shaky as it is, you never know where the next fashion capital is going to spring up. [Popseoul] and [Times of India]

Cosby sweaters are in for fall. Thanks, Williamsburg.  We're considering extended hibernation until this trend goes back to the depths of tacky hell from which it came. [The Cut

Quickies: What Obama wore, who's wearing Obama, Julia Roberts & Armani against AIDS, and more

81000160 Photo: Getty Images

Wondering who made Barack Obama's impeccable bespoke suit he wore during his killer speech at the DNC last night?
In a move of socio-conscious fashion and style, Obama chose to wear Hartmax Corp label Hart Schaffner Marx, which only employs union workers. [The Cut]

Union workers weren't the only ones to get Obama's support; he also generously lent his pretty-little-face to a pair of Andrew Christian underwear. To help move the masses, Christian also set up a photo shoot with some of daytime TV's sexiest stars, all in Obama-faced undies. Can we see ourselves in a pair? Yes, we can. [Towleroad]

At it again are Julia Roberts and Giorgio Armani, this time in the fight against AIDS. Roberts designed a limited edition t-shirt for the label that will sell for $145, with 40 percent of the gross profit margin going to The Global Fund, which finances AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria programs in Africa. $145 might seem steep for a t-shirt, but we'd say the benefits are well worth it. [WWD]

The trade shows are underway in Las Vegas, which means we're on trend watch.  One of the most prominent? The Japanese obsession with American workwear.  First karaoke...now this?! [Material Interest]

Eh, it's not the first place we'd go for fashion advice, but, being that we're of the open minded community, we might take a look at Playboy's new men's fashion advice section on Playboy.com. Clothed straight men are better than the other alternative offered on the site, no? [WWD]

Harper's Bazaar makes fashion wishes come true in a special game of celebrity dress-up

Karl
Photo: Getty Images

You've probably already seen the photos of Tyra Banks dressed as Michelle Obama and campaigning for even more attention than she already has (and probably deserves) in September's Harper's Bazaar. But if you haven't had time to properly pour through the issue, you might not know that the first lady of reality fashion television isn't the only one who got to play dress-up.

Bazaar asked several other style mavens to pick the celebrity they'd most like to be for the day and then made all their secret couture wishes come true. Michael Kors became James Stewart as L.B. Jeffries in Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window. Giorgio Armani chose Fred Astaire. And Karl Lagerfeld suited up in Phat Farm jeans to play rapper Lil' Wayne. "Believe it or not, I love rap," Lagerfeld told Bazaar.

Other designers involved in the shoot include Donna Karan, Donatella Versace, Alessandra Facchinetti, Alber Elbaz, Rodarte's Laura and Kate Mulleavy and Roberto Cavalli. TrendHunter.com is hosting the images specifically mentioned above, but for the full story you'll have to shell out a few bucks for the September issue of Harper's Bazaar or steal the copy from your hairstylist's waiting room.

Roberto Cavalli Reveals His Nightclub!; Simon Doonan to Wed; Christian Siriano Unveils on Bluefly.com; Men's Fashion Week in NY; Girogio Armani in a Speedo; Gay Shopping in Provincetown

81437451 Photo: Getty Images

When designers branch out into markets that are hardly their own, it's always fun to see if it's going to be a success or a train wreck.  With that in mind, who's not excited to see the mock-ups of Roberto Cavalli's new dance club in Dubai?  The rendering looks cheap, and we don't see any animal print in the interior decoration!  Honestly, Roberto--abandoning you morals so quickly? [The Cut]

Simon Doonan and longtime partner Jonathan Adler will tie the knot in California in mid-September.  Ever the quipster, Doonan is foregoing a big bash, saying "I always thought we were married, so I don’t feel like celebrating the fact that the government’s allowing me to think I’m married. It’s more like paying a parking ticket.” A long, long overdue parking ticket, sir. [The Cut]

Christian Siriano, everyone's favorite androgynous pixie, has unveiled his new line on Bluefly.com as part of his winning package from last season's Project Runway.  It's cute stuff if you need to suggest a few things for the drab hag in your life, and each piece has Siriano-esque names such as "Posh" (who is one of his biggest supporters) and "Transylvania."  As long as there's no "fierce" I'm fine. [NYT]

Men's Fashion Week is underway in New York, and I'm sitting here blogging about it rather than sitting there watching....which was not the case last year...excuse me while I make a few calls.  [Material Interest]

In case you were wondering, Girogio Armani wears a speedo.  You go, girl! [Socialite Life]

Vivienne Westwood's Gypsy Models; Justin Timberlake for Givenchy; Joshn Harnett in Armani Diamonds; New BFFs: Anna Wintour and Gerard Butler; Michael Jackson's Clothing Line?; Beguiling Buttons; Milan Trend Alert: Torso Tattoos; Milan in Review;

A member of the Milan council is lashing out against Vivienne Westwood's use of Roma gypsies in her most recent fashion show, saying she is adhering to a "romantic"   image of the Roma that "no longer corresponds to reality."  Romantic?  Last time I was in Rome my cellphone was snatched off a table by one of these gypsie folk, so I say put them on the catwalks and keep them off the streets! [Telegraph UK]

Perhaps one of the most anticipated campaigns in the fragrance world, Justin Timberlake's shots for Givenchy are getting out there.  Gosh, he's just done so well getting that pensive model look down that says "I'm better than you."  [Just Jared]

In other fragrance campaign news, now that JT is flaunting Givenchy, Josh Harnett has now been completely forgotten in the Armani Diamonds for Men ad.  Shafted again. [Now Smell This]

With Roger Federer hammering his way through Wimbledon right now, Anna Wintour has been seen gallivanting throughout Milan with 300 hottie Gerard Butler.  She claims it's to attend a Men's Vogue event in honor of Butler and also to scout a location for a Vogue photo exhibit, but, even the nastiest of succubus need to get some.  Go on and getcha some! [Fashionologie]

Rumors have been flying, and now they are substantiated that Michael Jackson is working on a unisex clothing line (collective "oh no..." please).  Working with Christian Audigier, the designer said “It’s the merging of the King of Pop with the king of fashion. Something explosive is going to happen.” Yeah, something explosive like diarrhea. [The Cut] via [Off the Rack]

It's not too often that men consider the "stance" of their shirt buttons, but Jerry Seinfeld didn't mention "the second button" in the final episode of the series for nothing.  As he said, “it literally makes or breaks the shirt.” [NY Times]

One of the biggest trends coming from Milan during the men's fashion shows? Torso tattoos. Yes, it turns out designers like Vivienne Westwood, Etro and Giorgio Armani are inking the tightly toned and tan bellies of their runway models.  Ugh, back to the gym. [The Cut]

Masculinity was the name of the game for most of Milan's designer fashions, and, as the shows have wrapped up, the reviews are now pouring in.  Take notes, boys.  Here comes Paris. [NY Times]

I don't want to act, I want to direct! Giorgio Armani is holding a competition to find the next great advertising director to film the next Emporio Armani Parfums commercial. He's inviting aspiring directors to create a commercial for his line of fragrances and submit them online. Submit your film by May 15th! The winner will be chosen by Mr. Armani himself. At least it won't be televised as a reality show. [British Vogue]

Are 50s Rockabilly fashions back in style in London? I thought the swing dancing and poodle skirts made their comeback about ten years ago. I guess we'll start seeing the greaser look stateside in about six months. [Independent via The Cut]

Calvin Klein is heading East...to the Middle East, that is.. to showcase collections and debut a new beauty line in Dubai. Since the U.S. economy sucks, why not hit up the oil-rich Emirates for some cold hard cash? [FWD]

Bahama-dwelling model/interior designer/author India Hicks will replace Todd Oldham (pictured) on Bravo's Top Design as a judge, but the cherubic homo will stay with the show and continue his role as the gay nurturing mentor a la Tim Gunn. [FWD]

Topshop Comes Stateside; Olympic Swimmers and Drag; Samuel L. Jackson Designs for Armani; Nina Garcia Leaving Elle; Yigal Dishes

73850142 Photo: Getty Images

British Cheap-chic retailer Topshop announced that they will open a U.S. flagship location in Manhattan on October 10th! Mark your calendars, boys. [Fashion Week Daily]

The swimsuits to be worn by swimmers on the U.S. Olympic team not only cover more of the male swimmers body, but also gives them a gender-neutral Ken doll-like crotch to reduce "drag." In other words, the swimming competitions just lost some gay viewers while some drag queens get some much-needed respect. [Queerty]

Celebrities are always meddling with fashion. Samuel L. Jackson has been trying to get Giorgio Armani to use more brocade, beaded fabrics—and fabrics used in the womens collection—for the mens collection. Armani needs to tell Samuel L. to stick to acting and let Armani design the clothes. I mean, celebrities are just walking coat hangers for designer clothes to get into celebrity magazines. [WWD]

Is Nina Garcia, Project Runway judge and Elle Fashion Director, leaving the magazine? When WWD reports a rumor, it's usually true... I said usually. What does this mean for her Project Runway gig? [WWD]

Giorgio Armani loves his gadgets. As a follow up to his Armani Samsung mobile phone, he is designing an LCD flat-screen television, taking Armani Casa to a whole new level. [WWD]

Karl Lagerfeld: The Videogame. Okay, not exactly, but his likeness will appear in the latest installment of Grand Theft Auto as a radio DJ. I thought the game was about hookers and running over pedestrians? Is this some subliminal advertising for Chanel and Fendi? [Fashionista]

Shoes Make The Man; Vuitton Does Urban Warfare; Leather Jacket Mania!; Perfume Wards of Evil Doers; Armani's Super Lux Luggage; Counterfeit Bust; Naomi in More Trouble; Project Runway Wins Award

There are many qualities of a leader—and being a sneaker connoisseur turns out to be one of them. A study found that people who bought more three or more pairs of sneakers a year were more likely to have leadership qualities than the less-sneaker-oriented folks. I wonder what researchers have to say about men who wear high heels? [Yahoo/Reuters]

Naomi Campbell was released on bail after being held on suspicion for assaulting a police officer. Reports say she got in a tiff over lost luggage. [Reuters]

The NY Times channels a little Rebel Without a Cause in its obsession with leather jackets. [NY Times]

What should you do with that crappy smelling celebrity cologne your mother gave you for your birthday? Use it as mace to ward off burglars and muggers! Apparently, Elizabeth Arden Red Door perfume is highly effective. [UPI]

Giorgio Armani launched a line of super-lux luggage for men and women in patent crocodile skin. I wouldn't recommend checking that when flying with Delta. [WWD]

Police raided a warehouse in Queens and seized $5.5 million worth of counterfeit bags just hours before Louis Vuitton's Brooklyn bash to call attention to the evils of counterfeiting. Coincidence? Or brilliant marketing? Hmmm... [WWD]

As reported yesterday, Giorgio Armani opened his virtual store in the virtual world, Second Life. According to WWD, "Style.com's Candy Pratts Price's avatar will interview Armani's avatar in the Second Life store about fashion and innovation." Seriously? This is getting to be ridiculous. I want to virtually slap someone. And how do you know it's not some middle-aged perv pretending to be the Italian designer? [WWD]

Uniqlo teams up with color-gurus Pantone to create a line of cashmere sweaters in 20 various shades for the Fall. If you don't know Uniqlo, it's Japan's answer to the GAP if it were cool again, and they sell cashmere sweaters for $129. [Fashion Week Daily]

Dsquared Gets Fergalicious; Armani's Second Life & Mobile Phone; Ferré's New Man

Dean and Dan Caten, the Canadian designers behind Dsquared, felt a little Fergalicious in Fergie's new music video for her song "Clumsy." The designers are featured in the video as Fergie Ferg struts the Dsquared runway and becomes fashion roadkill after a stumble. Giorgio Armani unveiled a new co-branded cell phone with Samsung, a couple months after he denied reports that he was jumping into the electronics market. Talking Trash with Marc; Uniqlo gets Chummy; Terry Richardson snaps Cavalli; Armani Denies Going Mobile

Terry Richardson (pictured), the mustachioed photographer who is known for stripping naked during his shoots, has been tapped to snap Roberto Cavalli's affordable H&M ad campaign. From the list of models cast for the shoot—it girls Jessica Stam, Lydia Hearst and Devon Aoki—it sounds like Cavalli blew the budget and couldn't hire equally attractive men to model the menswear. The Rage of the Sweater-Folder

57057341 The quality of customer service isn't necessarily proportional to the price tag, or the thread count, as the Luxury Institute determined in a recent study. Bloomberg News identifies Fendi and Hugo Boss as the luxury retailers with the worst customer service, and shines a spotlight on a recent incident of bangle-snatching by a shop assistant at a Paris Louis Vuitton store (they are now "beefing up staff and training to prevent a loss of customers").

Among the luxury brands providing the best experience for consumers are Hermes, Giorgio Armani, and Ferragamo.
