April 14, 2009Quickies: Kanye's Line, Rick Owens Sounds Off, Diesel Sale, +Kanye West spent five months preparing four pieces of clothing for his Past Tell line, which could debut any second now. That's enough to convince Tim Blanks that Kanye is worthy of a life in fashion. [Flare] Rick Owens on working with youngsters: "Not to put young people down but I get portfolios and I get applications and C.V.s that have images and like collages and stuff. And what the fuck am I going to do with a collage? I know how to make a collage. I need old people who know how to make things." [Hint] Womenswear sales may have fallen 6%, but menswear sales are up! Even Tom Ford is doing ok. “Women move from brand to brand depending on who has done a particular trend," Ford explains. "Men go into a store and they will spend more money because they’ll buy for the whole season. They don’t look at shopping as a recreation the way women do.” [FT] Andre Leon Talley mediated an audience Q&A with Valentino: The Last Emperor director Matt Tyrnauer. They talked about the man, the myth and, of course, the pugs. [The Cut] SALE ALERT: Diesel Black Friday! Save 30% on all merchandise at Diesel stores nationwide and online from April 17-19th. Now that's a stimulus package. [Diesel]

[NYP] First a Twilight fragrance, now one from Star Trek. Even the socially inept need to smell nice too, yeah? [Kiss and Makeup] Valentino hit up a gay party in New York. He reportedly walked into 1Oak on Sunday night, surveyed the crowd and then promptly left. The Sunday night crowd can be intimidating. [NYP]

Uniqlo's stock price. [WWD] The CFDA Awards nominations are out. Up for Menswear Designer of the Year: Calvin Klein's Italo Zucchelli and Michael Bastian. [WWD] What's it like working with Valentino and his partner Giancarlo? Says Valentino: The Last Emperor director Matt Tyrnauer: "They also change their minds more than any people I have ever met in my life, which made the whole thing even more of a challenge." [WWD] Speaking of the Emperor, he was on Martha Steward yesterday. The episode will air Friday, but apparently it wasn't as Valentino-m-g as the audience hoped. [The Cut]

[The Cut] Not one, not two, but three fashion exits: Carlo Brandelli, creative director at Savile Row tailor Kilgour, has left the company; Olivier Theyskens, as everyone speculated, has finally left Nina Ricci, and Avsh Alom Gur bowed out as creative director of Ossie Clark. The trailer for Valentino: The Last Emperor is out showcasing -- what else? -- dresses! tears! screaming! The other focus: Valentino's realtionship with his long time business partner and lover, Giancarol Giammetti. By all accounts, their relationship is marked by dedication and sincerity. When the partner of one of the most ubiquitous names in the industry can, in all earnestness, say "you look a little bit too tan," you know it's love. -- Seth Plattner

In case there is any speculation, Valentino is, in fact, retired. He's left all design duties to newly appointed Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli (what a mouthful). Says V himself: "If I decided to attend the presentation of their collection, it will only be as a supporter of two people I love and who have been close to me for man years." [British Vogue] Tommy Hilfiger and Markey Ramone, of -- who else -- The Ramones, are launching a clothing line. Tommy's brother, Andy, used to be in a band with Markey, thus Markey has known Tommy for 23 years, so, by the Pythagorean theory (or something), it's time for a rock n' roll clothing line! [Fashionista] Calvin Klein's new TV commercial is so hot it was initially banned -- even from late-night TV. Directed by Steven Meisel, the spot will now be the lead on the company's e-commerce site which launches tomorrow. An edited version will run in the U.S. while European countries will, of course, get the full steamy ad. [WWD] How to cut costs in rough financial times? Model your own clothes. [WWD] Church's is expanding into lifestyle accessories. The traditional British footwear company (owned by Prada) unveiled silk ties, cashmere scarves, blankets, small leather goods and an umbrella at Pitt Uomo. [WWD] Smell This: Burberry's new unisex fragrance, The Beat, which is targeted at the label's new younger demographic. [Fashionisto] Who doesn't love a good mix? Kris Van Assche apparently does.
